How to Enable and Run Ubuntu Bash on Windows 10

If you really want to run ubuntu bash on Windows 10? Surprisingly, it’s possible and in this tutorial, I will show you step by step instruction on how to do that.

Windows 10 Anniversary update, which is announced by Microsoft in last week build 2016 developers conference comes with lots of new features and changes. Some key features of Anniversary updates include new and updated extensions for Edge browser, Cortana Cross-Device features, updated emoji, and dark mode or themes settings.

Anniversary update of Windows 10 also comes with the Ubuntu Bash utilities and console kit. Although, it’s disabled by default, but can be enabled manually. If you really want to enable and run Ubuntu bash on Windows 10. You need to follow the steps in upcoming lines.

To enable and run Ubuntu Bash on Windows 10, you need to enable some options in Windows 10 features and Settings. You can do it very easily and doesn’t include any difficult steps.

How to Enable and Run Ubuntu Bash on Windows 10

Enable Windows Subsystem for Linux (Step One)

1. For that, you need to launch Settings App.

2. From the options click on System.

3. On the left panel, Select Apps & Features. On the right panel scroll down to the bottom until you see Program and Features options.

4. Click on the link and it will open the Program and Features Dialog box. Here you need to click on the link named as Turn Windows features on or off. You will see this feature on the left side.

5. Now this will open Windows Features dialog options. You need to scroll down to the option named as Windows Subsystem for Linux Beta, check the box to enable it. Just like shown in the image below:

6. To make changes, Click on the OK button. Now wait for few seconds as the system will install Ubuntu Bash in Windows 10.

7. You need to reboot your computer when prompted.

Congratulations, you’ve successfully installed Ubuntu Bash in Windows 10. Although, in the build 14316, Developer mode need to be enabled in order to use Ubuntu Bash console. You can check the upcoming steps to enable it.

Enable Developer Mode in Windows 10 (Step Two)

1. For that, you need to launch Settings App.

2. From the options click on Update and Security.

3. On the left panel, Select For Developers. On the right panel under Use Developer Features, you will see three options select Developer Mode.

4. When confirmation dialog appears, Click Yes to enable it.

Run Ubuntu Bash in Windows 10 (Step Three)

1. Launch the Command Prompt. For that, open the WinX menu by making right click on the Start Button and from the list click on Command Prompt (Admin).

Note: You can also click on “Command Prompt”.

2. After that, you need to type the following command:

3.When asked, you need to press Y to continue. After executing this command, Windows 10 will download all the necessary components from the Windows Stores and extract the Linux file system.

It will take few second and Bash is ready for use.

The good thing about Bash is that you can use numbers of regular Linux console commands and apps. You can even install the apps in the regular Ubuntu Linux way. For example, if you want to install Midnight Commander file manager using the command, then you need to execute the following command:

apt-get install mc
