If you really don’t like the Windows 10 after getting a free upgrade from Microsoft and now you want to uninstall Windows 10 and downgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1? Actually, it’s possible and in this article, you will find step by step tutorial on how to do it.
Microsoft released Windows 10 and provided users the option to upgrade to it for free, if they are running Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 with a genuine product key or license. As shared on Windows blog, more than 200 million users (including you and me) already upgraded to Windows 10 and count is still increasing.
After playing with all the new features of Windows 10 you realized that it’s not the operating system you are looking. Now what to do? Actually, Windows 10 comes with an option that let you uninstall the Windows 10 and downgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 very easily, if you have upgraded within a last one month. In future, if you want to upgrade to Windows 10, you can also do that.
Uninstall Windows 10 and downgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1

As discussed above, if you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and not performed the clean install of Windows 10, then you can easily revert back to the old version of Windows.
Downgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1 using Windows Rollback Feature
For doing this, you need to:
1. Launch Start menu – > Select Settings – > Update & security – > Recovery – > Click on:
- Go back to Windows 7 (If you upgraded from Windows 7)
- Go back to Windows 8.1 (If you upgrade from Window 8.1)
2. After that, click on button labled as Get started to uninstall Windows 10 and downgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. While doing this you will see a blue pop-up asking you about the reason why you are going back. Select the one reason out of the mentioned. You can also use Tell us more if you won’t find your reason listed in the options.
3. Click Next and it will start the rollback process and in few minutes, it will revert your PC or laptop to an older version.
Note: You will not find this option if it’s been more than a month. In this situation, you need to go with other recovery options available.
If it’s been more than a month, this option won’t be available in Settings and you’ll need to use a different recovery option.
The above procedure uses the old Windows installation which is created at the time when you upgraded to Windows 10 in the Windows installation folder named C:\Windows.old on your computer. You can discover this folder in File Explorer, however, you shouldn’t try to move it to trash folder. If you do so, above method would not work for you.
Undoubtedly, keeping all the files from previous Windows installation consume lots of hard drive space. You can check how much space it’s consuming by opening the Disk Cleanup application.
To save some space you can click:
Start button – > Type Disk cleanup – > Look for it – > Click the Clean up system files button to clean it.
But only do this, if you’re sure that you don’t want to downgrade to the previous version of Windows., use the Disk Cleanup tool to remove the Old Windows installation to quickly free up space.
There may be a possibility that Windows 10 won’t provide you option to rollback to the previous version as well as Old Windows installation folder because it’s more than a month that you have upgraded to Windows 10. What to do in that case? Check the following steps
Uninstall Windows 10 and Downgrade to Windows 7/8.1 after a one month
Suppose you own an old PC or laptop and you upgraded to Windows 10, that formerly had Windows 8.1 or 7 on it. That means your PC also came with a product key that you can be used to install and activate Windows 7 or 8.1 on it. To downgrade to Windows 7 or the previous version of Windows, you need to perform the clean install of Windows.
Thankfully, you can download ISO files of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 from Microsoft. After that, you need to burn ISO file into a DVD or create a bootable USB drive using Microsoft Windows USB/DVD.
Note: Make sure to backup all your important data from Windows 10 before performing the fresh installation.
After that boot using it and perform a fresh or clean installation of Windows 7 or 8.1, Its upto you whether you want to overwrite the Windows 10 installation which is already on your hard drive or format the installation drive. After doing a fresh installation, you need to look for your PC product key to activate it. For that:
In Windows 7, you need to look for a sticker with key printed on it. You can find this sticker on a laptop’s power brick, under your laptop, or in the removable battery box.
Windows 8 or 8.1
In Windows 8 or 8.1 you don’t need to do anything as the product key is already in your PC’s firmware and Windows 8.1 will be self-activated and let you reinstall Windows 8.1 without asking to you enter the product key.
In case, you purchased the new Laptop or PC that comes with Windows 10 preinstalled in it and you want to downgrade to the older version of Windows, that’s tougher. For that, you need to purchase a genuine product key of Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 and perform a clean install, provide product key when asked for during the installation process.
